1. substantial和substantially在表示“大量的”和“大体上地”时，都属于公文英语，用在比较正式的场合；
2. substantial同substantive都可表示“本质的，实质的”，但两者有一定的区别：前者一般用在real，important，sizable，solid，well-to-do，virtual等词上。后者主要用在一些特种情况上：在议会程序中，substantive motion（实质性的动议）是指用适当的方式清楚地处理某个议题。在法律上，主要用以区分substantive law（被执行的法律）和adjective law（执法的程序）。在服务行业上，用来去区分员工是全职工还是连是工。
